Welcome
UUCL ChildREn
Welcome Members, Friends, & Visitors:

Our Religious Education Program is an enriching and free benefit of attending UUCL. An excellent Bible-based Unitarian curriculum has been chosen for this year's RE. Preschool, Kindergarten, and first grade students will learn about "Superheroes of the Bible" , Grade School children will use the excellent curriculum "Bibleodeon" (modeled after the Nickelodeon television network) and the Youth group will learn about "Neighboring Faiths".

ADULT
Adult Religious Education: Developing your own Theology Discussion Group
For Adults
Thursday evenings from 7pm to 8:30pm Led by Skip Freidhof. This class will meet on a weekly basis during the fall and winter months. This discussion group will attempt to continue the spiritual exploration that was started by those that participated the Developing Your Own Theology classes. The format for these discussions will be somewhat informal and rely on participants to suggest topics for sessions. It is requested however that the focus of the discussions be on spiritual theology related topics. The initial session discussion topic will be a focus on the core beliefs of tribal cultures and whether or not we have comparable cornerstone beliefs within our culture and explore what these might be.

Adult Religious Education
Just because we're grown up doesn't mean we have to stop learning. Adult Religious Education classes are provided by members of the church as well as our ministers.

Topics of the past include: "Philosophy of the Soul", "Unplugging the Holiday Lights", and "UU Parenting".

Adult Religious Education courses are scheduled on weekday evenings, or on Saturdays. Childcare may be offered.

Youth Religious Education

Nursery:
A professional caregiver will tend to children from birth to 3/4 years. The caregiver is available for all services.

Early Grades; Pre- K, K & 1st (9:30 Service Only)

Super Heroes; Bible People:

"Super Heroes" is a values-based curriculum that has the following goals:

  • To introduce children to stories of people from the Bible who have acted with courage and wisdom in their attempts to lead their lives fully and make the world a better place for others
  • To show how the lives of these people confirm the principles which we, as Unitarian Universalists, strive to promote.
  • To encourage the children to lead their own lives fully and to use their own positive "super powers" as they interact with the world around them, and as they do so, to grow both ethically and spiritually.

Nineteen lessons include Moses, David, Solomon, Elijah, Joseph, "Christmas People," Jesus the Traveling Teacher, and Esther. The curriculum is self-contained (no additional resources to buy) and comes with a CD of the theme song. A "cookbook" format educates the teacher. Each lesson is written to engage multiple intelligences and contains a full-page picture home link and a fully crafted story that leads to dramatic play, games and art activities.

Children will also share and participate in in the Inter-generation Worship Services and Children's Chapel every 5th Sunday.

Middle Grades; 2nd-5th grades (9:30 & 11:15)

Bibleodeon

Bibleodeon introduces Hebrew and Christian scriptures by presenting the best-known Hebrew and Christian stories with such props as Bibleodeon microphone and such interactive challenges as investigating the Cain-Abil crime scene. Participants act in dramatic playlets, illustrate a time line, keep doodle books, give awards to outstanding biblical women, and more. They explore connections between biblical events and UU principles, between biblical ideas and their own lives. THey experience te Bible as one of the many wonderful UU sources.

The Unitarian Univesalist Congregation at Shelter Rock produced Bibleodeon.

Youth Group: 5th grade and above (11:15 only)

Neighboring Faiths

32 flexible sessions explore history and development of different faith traditions. Participants plan their own program by choosing which religious groups to learn about, visit* and relate to their own growing faith. Includes historical resources and tips for hosting guests, visiting other faiths, creating worship experiences and more. This curriculum is suitable for senior high youth and adults as well.

In addition to Neighboring Faiths, our Youth Group will continue to engage in discussions about faith and current events, as well as meet periodically for extracurricular activities.

Children's Chapel:

All classes will come together to create, participate and enjoy their own worship services in the religious education area. Note: The nursery will still be staffed for the younger children.

O.W.L. Classes:

Our Whole Lives program helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, this class is taught by trained teachers.
